The Optical Spectroscopy and Microscopy Facility provides advanced optical techniques, instrumentation and scientific support to researchers at Instituto Superior Técnico and beyond. We exist so that a research question does not stop at the point where a group lacks the instrument or the experience to answer it.
Advanced instrumentation is only useful when researchers can reach it. Our role is to maintain that instrumentation, keep the expertise around it current, and make both available to people whose main work is elsewhere.
That means shared access rather than duplicated equipment, and measurements planned around a scientific question rather than around whatever the instrument does by default.
Matching a scientific question to a technique, and knowing when two techniques must be combined to give an answer that holds.
Sample preparation, acquisition conditions, calibration and the practical judgement that separates a usable dataset from a noisy one.
Spectral interpretation, artefact identification, and support in presenting the data for a thesis, a report or a publication.
